Well, that didn’t go as planned

No worries, with that title I’m NOT talking about the trip to Italy. We’re doing well and we’re having a great time. We’ve had relaxed days on the terrace, enjoyed all the fresh veg and fruit, explored restaurants, my husband ran an evening race in 33C heat, I’ve been out for countless walks, I do daily push-ups and we’ve been out hiking. Lots of photos have been taken.

But when it comes to blogging while away, a few things happened.

I had to realise that with my number of photos and workflow with photography, it takes too long, I realised it’s hard to do computer things on a sunny terrace, and I also don’t want to sit with screens too much when we’re here.

The second issue is that we have very poor internet (only through our phones) and I made the mistake of keeping my photo library on iCloud and the syncing ate the bandwidth quite fast (I’ve now moved the relevant folder to an offline part of my hard drive).

The third issue is that our server crashed. I’m not competent enough with servers to know what happened, honestly I’m not sure even my husband knows what happened. The support question was moved to someone else and if we get the data back it will take too long. I quickly rebuilt the blog on the old (slightly dysfunctional but at least working) server, and the backup wasn’t up to date so 1-2 posts and some comments have been lost. It’s a bummer but I can live with it. My husband has started setting up a new, more secure, server environment and I’ll move over there during the autumn.

So tech went against me and I’ll share all the interesting bits when we come home. In the meantime, here are some of the photos I had already uploaded while attempting to keep posting.

I’ll back to some proper posting when I get home. In the meantime I hope you’re doing well and enjoying life wherever you are. Cheers and see you soon!

Hi Susanne – good on you for persevering and not throwing your hands up in the air and giving up. Also good on you for being present in the moment and enjoying the sunshine and your surroundings without being online all the time. It looks like the weather is beautiful and the surroundings are very scenic – so a win/win (even if the internet is a bit dodgy).

I had a moment of throwing my hands up in the air before the trip, when I realised the server didn’t send e-mail through PHP (I had no idea how it normally works) and I had to set things up myself. So I guess with the server crash I was already so used to new issues that I just shrugged my shoulders and did something else.
We’re having great weather, the first few days it was cooler than usual, then another heatwave came by. It’s been VERY HOT which requires some planning and being clever with when to do what and how, but we’ve been enjoying it.

Great go at all the improvising that had to happen. From cold & wet Australia we are seeing how hot it is/was in Europe & UK. Hope you have lots of great memories from your holiday!

We’re having such a lovely time, Denyse! It’s been very hot most of the time, now it’s a bit cooler but still 27-28C I think. We both want summer weather when it’s summer and have been starved of hot weather for a long time, so we don’t mind the Italian type of heat even if it can get intense. We just need to be clever about how to behave in the heat and to stay hydrated and on top of it with electrolytes. I’ll share all the fun later, I’m so glad to finally have been able to do some good hiking and exploring some of the nature trails.

That olive tree is so beautiful! It looks like something straight out of a fairytale.

Olive trees are so beautiful! They all have their own shapes, twists and turns, and I love it. I have to ask myself during every morning walk “Do I really need to photograph yet another olive tree?” (and of course I do!)

Your photos are stunning, Susanne! I love that early morning scene “early morning in Pianella”. So calm and soothing!
Sounds like Italy has been treating you both beautifully, despite the heat and all the tech hurdles. Losing posts and comments is a real bummer, but you handled it so calmly.
Enjoy the rest of your time there, and I look forward to all the stories once you’re back!

Those early morning photos were such a treat to shoot, and especially the one with the cat. I’ll need to do more early morning walks like that. This week we’ve been having a blast hiking! I’ll have so much to share when I come back!

Ugh. Server issues. BUT! You shared beautiful pictures and helped me get out of my post-no-vacation-summer-pre-semester funk today. So thank you. )
I cannot wait to hear more about your time in Italy. I hope it was all you wanted it to be.

Photos from Italy are good for brightening up the day! I have plenty more but probably will need to re-edit a lot of them now when I’m home and have a better space to assess colours.
