Fitness recap – Easter week

Hi all! After last week’s almost summer-like conditions, this week we’re totally back to the Irish reality of mixed weather and close to all seasons in one day. It’s April after all!

In these posts I join a weekly link-up to share my weekly fitness routine and the ups and downs during the week with barbells, walking shoes or else. This is good for accountability, for my own documentation, the fitness/running blogger community is lovely, and I hope these posts might inspire someone to start lifting weights and generally getting more active. I usually also add in some bits from everyday life as well as some photos. Let’s get into it!

This was a week of cooler weather and fewer walks, but at least I got out a few times. I photographed more cows, and did some exciting things in the gym.

Monday – walking 4 km + gym

I woke up and felt like my body wasn’t happy anywhere. There were various niggles – my left elbow, left shoulder (felt like I had been sleeping in a bad posture), something around the right knee, you name it.

I used all the TLC tools I have with heat lotion, shoulder movements and dusted off some rehab exercises for the arm. Then I went for a walk. It was a lot cooler than last week but still ok-ish after a while when I was warmed up. It was sunny, and as the Irish say, at least it was dry!

My body felt better after moving for a bit, and the flowers cheered me up. The shrub/tree in the second photo is my new favourite plant, because it blooms in the late winter to early spring before everything else comes alive and you need some colour in your life. I’ve bought two for my own garden now, they are supposed to be very tolerant so I hope to have some flowers there next year.

After walking, my knee niggle was gone but my shoulder and arm were still angry. I took myself to the gym. Movement is medicine, isn’t it?

New week, new program, with fewer reps – and we all know that also means heavier weights. Not all exercises were increased in weight, but some were and I did a good session including a new squat PB, and my arm and shoulder felt much better afterwards.

Fitness
  • Back squats, barbell 62,5 kgs
  • Lunges, barbell 35 kg
  • Flyes, 8 kg dumbbells
  • Barbell row, 35 kgs
  • Chest press, barbell 37,5 kgs
  • Straight arm pullovers, one 17,5 kg dumbbell
  • Upright row, barbell 22,5 kgs
  • Shoulder press, 7 kg dumbbells

Earlier I’ve squatted almost my bodyweight, but now I certainly squat my bodyweight. I didn’t know the weight to begin with but felt it was different. Even if an increase with 2,5 kgs isn’t a lot, it was a GREAT feeling. When I came home, before stepping into the shower I got onto the scale and my bodyweight today was exactly 62,5 kgs. Ha!

I also enjoyed being back up to 22,5 kgs with the upright row!

Tuesday

It was much windier than forecasted, and I stayed inside to continue the work of testing design & photo editing software.

Wednesday – gym

I was still cold and I prioritised work, but in the afternoon I went back to the gym.

Fitness
  • Deadlifts, barbell 45 kgs
  • Side step-ups
  • Renegade row, 10 kg dumbbells
  • Inclined flyes, 8 kg dumbbells
  • Good mornings, barbell 35 kgs
  • Parachutes
  • Forward raise, 7 kg dumbbells
  • Shoulder shrugs, 10 kg dumbbells

Deadlifts are working well again, and I loved these side step-ups! They’re a good quad burner but also good for working on the hips and many other muscle groups. I felt much stronger than the last time I did them.

Overall it was a good session, the slightly heavier Renegade row didn’t feel much of a difference compared to 9 kgs, and they went quite well.

Thursday – walking, 4 km

We were expecting rain so I went out for a walk while the weather was nice. I had planned to do a smooth walk, but went up the hill because I saw a herd of cows up there. I found an opening in the hedge, zoomed in and took some photos. After a while I started attracting a lot of attention.

A bit too much attention! When I continued up the hill, the cows followed me on the other side of the fence. That was a bit scary! Of course there was a fence between us but I don’t know cow behaviour enough to know if they’re just being interested and friendly, and they are big animals worthy of respect (but still cute!).

Friday – gym

Today was a rainy, foggy day and I continued exploring Affinity Designer. It’s really growing on me, and it has turned out to be a very worthy replacement of Adobe Illustrator. This means that I can now cancel my subscription and when it expires in September, it’s bye bye to Adobe.

In the afternoon I went to the gym, and today my body was feeling good. Even the elbow! It was a great session with new PBs and good achievements.

Fitness
  • Sumo squats, barbell 57,5 kgs
  • Bulgarian split squats, barbell 37,5 kgs
  • Straight arm pullovers, 9 kg dumbbells
  • Dumbbell row, 17,5 kgs
  • Chest press, 12,5 kg dumbbells
  • Chest press, barbell 37,5 kgs
  • Bent-over lateral raise, 7 kg dumbbells
  • Cuban press, 4 kg dumbbells

A big yes to some heavier sumo squats!

Early last year I attempted 40 kg Bulgarian squats which were a big fail. That triggered me to start a Bulgarian split squat challenge for the month of March (some of you will remember this). I developed some useful strategies and likely built some extra hip strength, but even if there were some improvements, I still haven’t been able to do them confidently. Last time I did them I tricked my brain by starting on the problematic leg, which worked quite well. I was now very curious about how I would feel doing them with this quite decent weight increase.

37,5 kgs didn’t seem more challenging than 30. I did some quite good sets and even if I had some trouble finding stability in the beginning of the last set, it would probably have been the same with a lower weight, and when I got started with the actual squats, I could do some proper reps too. This was a big win – I’m getting there!

Saturday

The weather forecast was rain until lunchtime, then clear and quite nice. This was wrong, it rained all day and I stayed inside working. In the evening we went to the new place to play music. This will be a monthly session which I don’t mind because weekly is a bit much if you want to add some variety with new songs and tunes. We had a great night! The next time we hope to get some other musicians with us too.

Sadly, the 2025 edition of painful elbow is on the left arm, which is much more problematic than what I had last year. The left arm is my fretting arm with the guitar and it just HAS TO work. I had some pain when playing yesterday and this is not ok. It could simply have been that there was some DOMS involved but… we’ll see.

Sunday – walking, 7 km

The morning started rainy and cold but it turned into a very nice day. It’s also Easter Sunday and I should do something else than fiddling with fonts, curves and photo editing. Also, working too much on the computer isn’t a good thing for elbow and shoulder health, so a good walk was called for.

The weather went cloudy, but this is a good thing for photography! Sunshine is lovely but colours are more vibrant with less harsh contrast.

I walked 7 km and it was a lovely walk. My legs felt great, my feet were happy all the time (I was wearing my Altra hiking shoes) and it was nice and mild. I took quite a few photos too.

That’s all for today. Next week we’re expecting some very mixed weather but I’ll go walking when I can and keep up the good work in the gym. We have no specific plans for a while which is quite relaxing! But my husband is getting close to his pre-marathon taper, and I need to figure out how to get around in Limerick and where is the best spot(s) to take photos. AND hope for good enough weather.

Happy Easter everyone, and all my best wishes to Catrina who is running the Boston marathon tomorrow!

Thanks to Kim and Deborah for hosting the Weekly rundown link-up! This is a meeting place for fitness-related bloggers to share our fitness happenings and achievements during the week. I very much enjoy this community and getting inspiration from the other bloggers. You can visit the link-up here.

Wow looks like you are making serious gains in your strength! Doesn’t that feel amazing!? I love all of your pics this week 🙂

It’s a fantastic feeling to see those plates on the bar increase! Certainly a boost in self-confidence.

Congrats on a solid week, even if the weather wasn’t as nice as last week.

I hope your shoulder/arm gets better and stays better.I feel like I’m always dealing with something.

I’d be spooked by the cows following me too — even with the fence.

Figuring out new software can be a real time sink but so worth it when it is an improvement!

Yes, it’s always something, isn’t it?! Last year’s arm issue was frustrating but at least it didn’t interfere with my guitar playing!
I’m really pleased with what I’ve seen so far in the Affinity suite, and so happy to get rid of Adobe. I’ve loved Adobe CC but the cost is enormous and I also love owning things instead of having a subscription. (and don’t get me started about the AI push)

    Just love that cow pic.
Our weather has been crazy – snow/rain and then 80 yesterday.
Hope the elbow pain is gone soon.
I am starting to get inspired. I may even start lifting.

    1. Susanne avatar

I got some really cool cow pics that day!
So happy to have inspired you, comments like that always make my day! Start with some simple lifts such as dumbbell rows, and lateral raises and shoulder presses with dumbbells instead of machines, to get used to free weights. For legs you could do lunges with dumbbells and goblet squats. There’s plenty of stuff on YouTube to learn about proper form etc if you can’t access a personal trainer (which is always the best).

You are rocking the street work!! It’s great to read about your progress, and so inspiring!! I hope your weather improves!

Oops… I meant strength work (autocorrect fail)

    2. Susanne avatar

Thank you! I really feel good right now (except that flipping left arm, ugh)!! Autocorrect is evil, lol!

Yay for strength gains – way to go! HAppy Easter week! We don’t get any time off here in the US sadly — but my colleagues in Europe all get vacation for the holiday. Love all the flowers!

    1. Susanne avatar

Thanks Melissa! Here in the most Catholic country you can imagine, for some reason Good Friday is a normal weekday, but today is a holiday.

Great work in the gym! Glad your knee and shoulder ended the week feeling good. I can definitely relate- it seems like something always hurts, and sometimes just moving around is the cure.
i love your photos! The cows… they seem so gentle. It’s funny that they followed you.

    1. Susanne avatar

Cows are weird creatures… I don’t know how much to trust them. I love hanging out with them but I prefer if there’s a fence between us. I’m so bummed about the left arm. If only it could still be the non-fretting arm I’d be happier.

Nice work on those weights! You are getting stronger, my friend. i can empathize with all the various aches and pains–last week I pulled my right groin when running those 100m sprints. My left knee has become a chronic problem. Sigh. Getting older isn’t easy..

I love all your cow photos and hope to get some of my own when we travel up to Wisconsin!

I woke up to the sad news about the pope, and I can only imagine the atmosphere in Ireland today.

    1. Susanne avatar

I probably should be ashamed of myself but I had no idea the pope had died! A while ago I stopped the habit of reading the news in the morning because it made me so miserable (I do check it in the evening though to be a decent person and know what’s going on in the world, I just didn’t want it to ruin my day). But of course I knew he was critically ill recently. That’s sad about his death.

Maybe I should start seeing age as a reason for all the niggles! I’ve always seen pains and aches as a consequence of mistreating my body (sedentary lifestyle) for so many years, especially since most of previous aches and pains disappeared when I got stronger. But I know as we age we need to ramp things up more slowly and recovery is slower, etc.
Ageing aside – it’s a really good feeling seeing all this progress with the weights!

Well done in the gym Susanne!

Love the cow pictures. I prefer a fence between me and a cow as well, I read a stat that they are one of the top reasons for animal related deaths! Yikes!

    1. Susanne avatar

Oh my goodness! That’s a bit scary. I can imagine though, since cows are some of the most common animals on farms. Perhaps not dairy cows though? But who knows.

  9. Jenn avatar

Oh my goodness! Those cows! And the flowers! Cows are big but they are usually pretty docile. You do have to watch out for the bulls, and the new moms, but usually they don’t mean any harm.

I’m sorry you are having so many aches and pains. That’s got to be so frustrating.

    1. Susanne avatar

At least I didn’t see any calves so they were probably just curious.
Most aches disappeared but the elbow pain is still there… sigh.

  10. Catrina avatar

Squatting your body weight is amazing! That’s a goal I really need to work towards.
And what a strong week overall, physically and mentally! Pushing through shoulder grumbles and elbow rebellion while still showing up for your workouts is next-level resilience. Also, that deadlift + side step-up combo is genius — I might steal it.
And thanks for the shout-out at the end, Susanne! It really helped to know that people are cheering for me virtually during the race!
Quick question: what’s your go-to move for building serious glute strength? During yesterday’s race, they definitely felt weak… I really need to do something about it.

    1. Susanne avatar

Squatting your body weight is a great goal, and that added to having finished various big marathons, imagine how far above average you’ll be!
For glute strength I’d recommend squat variations, standard squats are fine but especially sumo squats and Bulgarian split squats, standard split squats, and add lunges & reverse lunges, and sumo deadlifts. Some people swear by hip thrusts, I’ve never done them but I’ve built a lot of glute strength and muscle with the above, I do them all regularly in different combinations. But make sure you work on all the big muscle groups. You’ll never go wrong with doing all the big compund lifts regularly – squats, deadlifts, rows and presses. I’ve probably overworked my glutes, last year when I did the Bulgarian squat challenge and earlier this year at the end of my foot rehab when I did a lot of extra squats and lunges, and my lower back problem that flares up sometimes may be caused by overworked glutes. So a balanced program and working on overall strength is important.
I really enjoyed tracking your race yesterday, I was so impressed by how well you kept up a consistent pace!

      1. Catrina avatar

Thank you so much, Susanne! I really appreciate you following along yesterday!

Your strength advice is super helpful – thank you for taking the time to share all that. I’ve done sumo deadlifts and really like them, but I’ve never tried Bulgarian split squats. I keep hearing about them though, so maybe it’s time to add them in (carefully…).
Good reminder, too, about keeping things balanced – it’s easy to overdo one area and then pay for it elsewhere. I’ve definitely learned that the hard way a few times.

Appreciate the encouragement and all the practical input – I’ll keep chipping away at that bodyweight squat goal!

        1. Susanne avatar

I’m happy to help! Also, thank you for what you said about resilience earlier. I think I’ve said this many time to another reader who frequently mentions my grit – I’ve never seen myself as someone with grit nor resilience, and perhaps still don’t see that in myself so it’s very confidence-boosting that someone else does.

  11. Debbie avatar

Congrats on the weight increases! That’s always a great feeling. I’m sorry to hear about your painful left elbow and hope by now that it isn’t bothering you.

I love the nosy and peek-a-boo cow pictures! Holsteins are generally very docile animals, especially females without baby calves. I couldn’t imagine they’d rush the fence to hurt you, most likely they were just very curious.

    1. Susanne avatar

Thanks, Debbie! That is good to know about Holstein cows. I love watching them and photographing them!
The elbow is very much up and down but since it’s not hurting all the time anymore and doesn’t disturb training, I don’t worry so much about it.

Another awesome week, though sorry the rain isn’t following the rules. We are having summer weather today before it gets chilly again. (I am traveling next week so don’t mind as I won’t be here to complain, ha.)
Remind me again of what the coding is for? This is the business, right? How are things on that front?
Hope you are getting out more now that it is a few weeks after you wrote this…

    1. Susanne avatar

We’re on our second week having summer weather! May is treating us really well so far.
Business is going extremely slowly since I battle tech problems upon tech problems and then the Trump tariffs came on top of that so I’ll have to re-work the solutions to sell to the US (but it will be possible). And every now and then I dive into a period of self-doubt which kills my productivity… sigh. But I’ve done a small website job for an American photographer and now I’m fixing up the shops that were a little bit on hold for a while. I always do some coding either for myself or to build features in a WordPress theme I’m making as a base I can to use to (hopefully) build websites for others.
