Goals for 2025

Goals and plans for the new year

I don’t do New Year’s resolutions. They are so pointless – if you want to change something about yourself you don’t have to wait until the new year!

Instead, in recent years I’ve chosen a special focus for the new year, expressed in one word, aka a Word of the year.

  • For 2022 (I think?) I chose CALM – to learn to stress down and focus less on things I can’t control.
  • For 2023 I chose JÄVLARANAMMA – to keep up the good work in the gym and push myself more to get stronger. It became a year when I needed all that JÄVLARANAMMA simply to go through life with my sanity intact!
  • For 2024 I chose JOY – as a contrast to the miserable 2023.

2024 was much better than 2023, and definitely brought a lot of joy, but it was a messy and exhausting year. You can read more here, but generally I had a lot of inner struggles and slipped back into a lot of negative thinking patterns. During the year I’ve come to understand myself better which is good, but generally I’ve spent way too much time in my own head, and during 2025 I want to come out of my shell and back into the strong attitude I had when I turned 50. Life is short and we need to be out there living it!

I was inspired by Deb with the word THRIVE, and by Jenn with the word WORTHY (which I meant to use as in self-respect), and I thought of Sue’s blog post series about being an active participant in life, and the word PARTICIPATE came the closest to what I had in mind. I also thought of the word BOLD (also inspired by Deb), and SHOWING UP – a concept rather than a word.

It took a while, but finally the perfect word appeared – the word that collects everything under one roof.

Some people have described me as “gutsy” and I can agree with it to some extent. I’ve been travelling solo when I was younger because my friends didn’t want to or were unable to come with me. I went to work as an au-pair with almost no money. 6 years ago I quit my nursing job that I used to love but later made me sick and miserable, and I moved to Ireland to escape long icy winters. Here while surviving the pandemic, I started studying for a new career, and in my free time I spend time in pubs singing for an audience.

But in reality I still have a lot of fears. I enjoy all the things I do, but many times I’d prefer hiding in a corner because I don’t feel good enough, like I don’t fit in anywhere, and it’s preventing me from truly enjoying all the good things in life.

My word of the year for 2025 will be COURAGE. It will be very much related to showing up despite imperfection, and truly participating in life.

I need courage to…

  • believe in and respect myself
  • stop thinking I have to fit in
  • just show up, be myself and enjoy the ride
  • believe good things can happen
  • embrace that what-ifs can also mean… what if I succeed and everything goes well!
  • allow myself to fail and be imperfect because that’s life and how we learn and grow
  • show up more on social media and on the blog
  • show up more with my photography and other creative projects even if I feel mediocre
  • push harder with my insecurities in the gym (waving hello especially to the heavier squats and deadlifts)
  • go hiking again
  • and a lot more!

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”

Winston Churchill

Misc goals

As always, I have some various more specific goals I will work towards, and some of you know what the main one will be..

  • Strong feet! I’m tired of stupid injuries and will do everything I can to build strong feet, strong hips, good balance and stability and everything else that help me walk and hike injury-free. I’ll write more about this shortly.
  • More music practice and confidence in music. I’ve said this for a few years but haven’t set up a solid routine. This year I’ll make a routine for music practice and I WILL get to the “Black mountain rag” on the guitar and be able to sing “Walk on boy” in A minor (this is important because it’ll enable me to learn Doc Watson’s guitar fill which doesn’t work in the Em shape!).
  • More photography, and to work more on my photography skills. I need to get back to taking photos daily! And with the new camera and the technical limitations out of the way, I have no excuses to not work on the more artistic skills such as composition, lighting and use of natural light.
  • Keep up the good work in the gym, become more confident and make more progress with strength and muscle mass.
  • Get back to walking 10k and beyond. Yes, after my recent foot injury I have to start from scratch but that’s what it is and at least now I’m generally stronger than I used to be.
  • Get my whiskey blog up and running again. It’s been silent for way too long.

Do you have a special focus of the year? Please share your thoughts in the comments!

I’m sharing this post in a special link-up hosted by Deb, Sue, Donna, and Jo.

It certainly is a versatile word that is relevant to so many aspects of life. I look forward to being more present and more social online (and IRL) again! Hope your week will treat you well!

A great Word choice Susanne – and I love all your reasoning behind it. I hope you publish more of your photography this year – I always love the clarity and light in the ones you’ve shared.

Thanks for your lovely comment about my photography! That makes my day!

I’ve been very inactive with the camera during the autumn, mostly because of that foot injury and that I haven’t been able to go for longer walks. I miss my photoshoots so much! Now we’re in my low season with photography (since I’m a lot into nature photography) but I’m planning to get more creative with indoor photography projects and will buy a flash for my new camera asap.
In recent months I’ve also thought of expanding my blog to more topics, and include a lot more photography. It would probably mean moving back to my personal domain name and bringing my fitness posts over there mixed with photography and more. When I quit my old blog in 2022, I had lost interest in writing about my life and related things, but lately I’ve changed and now I really miss having a place to share ALL my interests. This wasn’t meant to be a one-niche blog but I’ve still kept it quite fitness-focused.

What an inspiring choice for 2025!
COURAGE feels like such a powerful word, especially with all the intentions you’ve attached to it.
I love how it ties into showing up, embracing imperfection, and pushing yourself in every area of life.
Your specific goals are so diverse and interesting: hiking, strength, music, photography and whiskey! It’s all quite exciting.
Wishing you all the courage you need to tackle those heavier squats and to keep sharing your talents with the world. You’ve already done so many gutsy things—here’s to an amazing year of showing up and thriving! 🌟

Thank you! I’ll do my very best to not slip back into that negative thinking. At least my attitude is something I can control!
I was happy to stumble into the word courage – it seemed like the perfect choice!

Hi Susanne, it is so lovely that you have joined us to share your WOTY ‘Courage’. This is the perfect word for you and for all the reasons you have listed. When I hear the word Courage, I think of Strength because it gives us the strength to overcome our fears. I look forward to reading more about your WOTY in 2025. You might also be interested in a new link up we are starting. Wellness Reimagined will be a monthly link up where we share our health and wellness progress based around our goals. This might fit nicely with your blog so if you can join us we would love to have you. I will be publishing an announcement post later this morning with all the details. We are starting next Monday 13 8am Brisbane time and from February it will be the first Monday of each month. I hope to see you there. Wishing you a very happy and healthy 2025. Love Sue L xx

Hi Sue, that’s a lovely connection between Courage and Strength! Last year my mind strayed away from my WOTY but I’ll work more on keeping it as a focus this year because it’s important to me to get my life back on track and this year’s word will be very helpful.

I read about the new wellness link-up on Jo’s blog! It sounds like a wonderful idea and I’ll definitely try to be there to join!

I love this Susanne, I find it interesting how many of us feel like ultimately our Words of the Year chose us, more than us choosing them. I look forward to hearing more about how courage serves you throughout this year.

    1. Susanne avatar

I agree! So many people have a concept of sorts in mind for their WOTY but ultimately the correct word comes to them!

Hi Susanne, what a great word you’ve chosen. It fits you perfectly and for all the reasons you have stated. I’m so pleased to hear that my previous words have resonated with you and feel so happy to have been of some help! I wish you well for all of your aims for 2025 and it’s great to have you join in our linkup. I think these WOTY posts are my favourites because we share so much of our innermost thoughts. Take care x

    1. Susanne avatar

I couldn’t agree more, Debbie! I was delighted to read about Denyse’s idea for this link-up because I enjoy these posts so much and it’s so interesting to read what other people have chosen – in many cases words I would never had thought of.

Showing up really is the thing when it comes to both creative pursuits and goals, isn’t it? I was saying to someone earlier today if I waited for the muse to show up every day I’d never get anything written, but I have to show up in case she does too. The nightmare would be if she (my muse) showed up and I hadn’t. Would she bother coming back? Here’s to 2025.

    1. Susanne avatar

Showing up is the key to success with so many things in life! You’re spot on about writing and I think this is my main problem with writing! I simply haven’t treated it like something I need to show up with.

  9. Donna avatar

Hi, Susanne – Thank you for joining us and sharing your WOTY for 2025.
COURAGE. is such a great word choice – I especially love its tagline “showing up despite imperfection”
Wishing you a wonderful year of courage and participation ahead!

    1. Susanne avatar

Thanks Donna! The showing up despite imperfection is probably the hardest (and most important) part!

What a wonderful choice! I hope to write about my own this week – Priorities (or, alternatively, Prioritize). I really need to prioritize the things that matter most to me – the things that make me feel I’m at my best, whether at work, at home, or elsewhere. I’m having my big birthday this year, and that’s another reason it’s come to the forefront.

Prioritizing things requires courage, though, so I feel like we have chosen related-but-not-the-same goals. I’ll be here supporting you as you stride – strongly – with courage through 2025. Can’t wait to see what the story is in December!

    1. Susanne avatar

Yes, I agree they are related! Prioritising always means saying no to something, and that requires courage in so many cases. And the big birthday certainly pushes some reflections which will lead to changes and other priorities!
