Fitness recap – walking weather, and cows

This was THE week of good weather, and subsequently good walking. Some days this week felt like summer. What a difference it makes for the mood after this long, cold, dreary winter! I’ve done some lovely hill walks, purchased yet another pair of walking shoes (!!), and good gym workouts happened too.

In these posts I join a weekly link-up to share my weekly fitness routine and the ups and downs during the week with barbells, walking shoes or else. This is good for accountability, for my own documentation, the fitness/running blogger community is lovely, and I hope these posts might inspire someone to start lifting weights and generally getting more active. I usually also add in some bits from everyday life as well as some photos. Let’s get into it!

This was the best week, in terms of walking, in a long long time. Here’s the summary:

Monday – gym + walking, 4 km
Tuesday – walking, 4,8 km
Wednesday – gym
Thursday – walking, 3,7 km
Friday – walking, 8,4 km
Saturday – gym
Sunday – rest

The weather was quite odd this week. We had 3-4 degrees (37F) and almost frost in the morning, then up to about 14C (57F) or more during the day, and some days it was WAY warmer than that. I’ve been out in shorts and tank top during the day, and then in the evening going into town I was wearing two layers and a fluffy jacket. But we got some hints of summer and I loved it.

Monday – gym + walking

I stayed inside in the morning, but my husband went to test his new bike, a gravel bike he bought a while ago that will work better on our rough roads than the road bike he’s been using. He came back absolutely frozen! But at least I think he liked the bike.

As soon as the temperature was up to around 10 degrees I went out for a walk, on my favourite new route, the rocky road up the hill. It’s lovely here when the gorse is in bloom.

And the cows are back!

I walked 4 km and it was lovely. I wore leggings, my warm-ish runner’s top and a thin wind jacket, and felt very overdressed. Isn’t that a good feeling, already in the first half of April? Of course I know it won’t last, but anyway!

Then in the afternoon it was gym time.

Fitness
  • Sumo squats, barbell 50 kgs
  • Lunges, barbell 35 kg
  • Chest press, barbell 37,5 kgs
  • Renegade row, 9 kg dumbbells
  • Good mornings, barbell 30 kgs
  • Straight arm pullovers, barbell 20 kgs
  • Upright row, barbell 20 kgs
  • Lateral raise, 7 kg dumbbells

This was a good workout and I have nothing new to comment about!

Tuesday – walking

I took the same route again, with some lighter clothes this time, and went a bit further up the hill. There’s an abandoned house up there that I like to photograph, but realised it’s much prettier in the late summer when the montbretia in front of it is in bloom. It was a lovely walk of 4,8 km, up to the top of the hill and back.

Wednesday

Today I was stuck with a coding problem and stayed inside to figure it out. But at least I went to the gym.

Fitness
  • Romanian deadlifts, barbell 45 kgs
  • Back squats, barbell 55 kg
  • Inclined flyes, 8 kg dumbbells
  • Chest press, barbell 37,5 kgs
  • Straight arm pullovers, 9 kg dumbbells
  • Barbell row, 30 kgs
  • Shoulder press, barbell 15 kgs
  • Forward raise, 7 kg dumbbells

I felt really good doing these RDLs. After these, the squats were a bit lighter than usual which I was very happy about because my legs felt like toast. My knees were shaking and I barely made it through the third set! Everything else was quite straightforward, I’m happy to (FINALLY) see that I’m making some progress with the barbell shoulder press and now manage to make it to 10-11 reps on the last two sets.

Thursday

I had decided to make it a soft day to give my body some TLC so I went for a smooth walk without steep hills. I walked 3,7 km and it was lovely and warm.

In the afternoon I decided it was time to take the outdoor furniture out, and voilà…

Friday – walking

Today my trainer needed to be somewhere else so we moved my session to Saturday. The weather was fantastic again so I took the opportunity to go for a longer walk. I went down to the next village and around a loop with some massive hills to get back. It’s 8,4 km and I was happy about all my leg work in the previous months because those hills didn’t seem that hard at all.

And, did anyone ask for more cows?

During this walk it was so warm that I only wore shorts and tank top, and occasionally a thin jacket. It really felt like summer, and when I came back my husband was working in the garden (he’s making a walled patio) and after he finished we sat outside for a long time. We only went inside because we were hungry, not because it got cold. How amazing for April!

Saturday – gym

It’s so out of my habit going to the gym on a Saturday, and earlier than usual too. I have my food and pre-workout routine (or ritual, if you prefer!) to fit my usual workout times but that doesn’t work on a Saturday when I get up later than usual and take it very easy in the morning. I only had a quick simple pasta for lunch with some bits of turkey rashers. It must have been enough, because I did a decent session in the gym.

Fitness
  • Hexbar deadlifts, 48 kgs
  • Bulgarian split squats, barbell 30 kg
  • Dumbbell row, 17,5 kgs
  • Chest press, 12,5 kg dumbbells
  • Push-ups
  • Wide grip upright row, barbell 15 kgs
  • Lateral raise, 7 kg dumbbells
  • Bent-over lateral raise, 7 kg dumbbells

Bulgarian squats, yay! It seems I’m ok-ish with them nowadays. I stayed with my strategy to start on my left (most problematic) leg. I don’t feel stable with them but I don’t have any big problems either.

I didn’t feel great with the dumbbell row today, particularly on the left. I had to leave it to 10 reps in the last set. Do you remember my gardening injury to my right elbow/tricep last May? I’m having something similar in my left arm this year. This is not due to gardening, I actually have no idea what caused it. I’ll go with the flow, give it some TLC, keep doing what I can do and see how it develops.

Sunday – rest and photo app testing

The weather is a lot less stable today and instead of the nice summer-like temperatures we had on Friday, it’s not even up to 10C. I’ve decided to take a day of rest and do some computer work. I’m trying to solve some spam problems, but also something more pleasant – I’m testing some new photo editing apps to see if they can be viable replacements for Lightroom and Photoshop.

I’m increasingly annoyed over Adobe for all the random AI tools they keep throwing in my face (what about just putting them as options in the menu like with everything else?), and in addition, the current price tag of the Creative Cloud subscription makes my hair stand up. I’ve found a good alternative for InDesign, so if these new photo apps work well enough for what I need to do, I only need to keep Illustrator which would cut the cost with at least 50%. Wish me luck!

And a few words about walking shoes

So, the elephant in the room, walking shoes. My more minimalist shoes I bought some month ago are LOVELY. So comfortable that I want to kiss them. But my feet haven’t agreed with walking longer distances in them. It can very well be that I generally need to get used to walking longer distances. It can also be that I need arch support and/or more fluff to walk longer than 3-4k. The arch support in the insoles I bought recently is a bit too rigid and haven’t helped a lot. And when I’ve used my old Altras like on Friday, my feet haven’t been happy, and I believe they’re a bit too worn out after all. I tried my old running shoes, standard Asics with 8-10 mm heel drop and they felt SO awkward and uncomfortable after all this time in zero drop shoes! The only shoes that have felt 100% good recently have been my new, colourful Altras meant primarily for hiking.

So I gave in and bought a second pair of new Altras, Escalante 4, to use for road walking. I’m sure when I’m back to where I used to be with walking, I can probably walk happily in the Bahé shoes too, but for now I just want to walk and be comfortable and not think so much. As Jenny said in a comment a while ago, Altras for the win!

Runners can own 5+ pairs of running shoes without shame, so why not?

That’s all for this week. I’m glad for all that walking, sunshine, good lifting (despite the new elbow bummer) and cow sightings. I hope you’re doing well and have enjoyed a good, spring-like week too. If you’re a runner, how many running shoes do you own, and use somewhat regularly?

Thanks to Kim and Deborah for hosting the Weekly rundown link-up!

I think we all need different shoes for different levels of walking and running and hiking. I hope the new Altras serve their role well.

I can see why a gravel bike would be a necessity on your roads. That would be a rough ride on skinny tires.

Love all the cows and the scene at the pier is gorgeous too!

You’re probably right about the shoes, and I probably haven’t treated walking as a proper sport before. I have high hopes for the new Altras. I used Escalante for some time before, while I had the stress fracture, I bought them before I got the boot, and only replaced them later (to Lone Peaks) because they were a bit too big. They were very nice shoes otherwise.

Lull the cows! They. Look so happy 😉 Great week of workouts, and yay for all the walking! Now, lets just hope for more consistently warmer temps…

    1. Susanne avatar

They look so chill! There’s something special about cows. This week we’re having the same cold temps in the mornings but cooler during the day… we’re back to normal April weather.

Well you already know how I feel! Altras for the win (ha) and also, get as many pairs as you need! I’m having yet another shoe crisis, which is that I just don’t love my trail shoes. I’ve run the last couple long runs in my road shoes (all altras). Now my race is coming up, and I’m not sure what I’m wearing!!! How do I get myself into these predicaments? I’ll be heading to the store this week to try on some different trail shoes.
Anyway- I LOVE all the walking photos. And, your gym sessions sound intense and productive. I think about you sometimes when I’m at the gym. Your workouts are much harder than mine, so I just tell myself, if Susanne can do it, I can too.

    1. Susanne avatar

Aah, that’s a hard one with the race coming up and not happy about the shoes. Do they have Altras in your local shop? Or are you going with another brand? Have you tried Topos?
My gym sessions are indeed intense, and feel productive! I don’t say much about them anymore because it’ll get repetitive about how Renegade rows after bench presses are evil (but good for building endurance and mental strength as well as exhausting the muscles), or how I have to catch my breath between the last reps of lateral raises.. etc. It’s a good feeling to be able to push through a really hard set.

I hope you like the new shoes. I have oodles of shoes! It’s more like a dozen in my main closet… and usually a few pairs reserved only for treadmill running… and a few more for trail running/hiking. What can I say, I just love shoes!
I use Photoshop Elements which is quite a bit cheaper. Which product are you considering a switch to? I’ve never tried the full blown version of Photoshop so I don’t know what I’m missing! Elements works very well for my digital scrapbooking needs.

It sounds like I should stop feeling bad for buying so many shoes!
I’m looking at Pixelmator Pro (which works a lot like Photoshop) and Photomator (similar to Lightroom), both are owned by Apple, nicely priced and have nice integrations with Mac, and there are iOS/iPadOS versions too. Both look very promising right now. I actually downloaded Photoshop Elements, I’ve used it in the past and was happy with it back then but now it has changed a lot! I can see how it’s useful for digital scrapbooking, it now looks more like a basic graphic design tool which is fine because that’s what I mostly use Photoshop for but it seems to lack the more advanced tools that I need.
Other than these I’ve tested the Affinity apps, and Affinity Publisher was very nice and would work fine for my needs where I now use Adobe InDesign. The vector/illustration app still isn’t good enough but I’ll keep following what they do with it. Affinity was purchased by Canva last year so maybe they’ll eventually add the tools I need. If I go this route, the only apps that require subscriptions will be Photomator and Adobe Illustrator (which I’ll keep using for now).

You don’t want to know how many pairs of running shoes I own..because Brooks is very generous with me! I do have my favorites, though–the Hyperion Max 2 makes me run fast! The Ghost is still the all around favorite. And the Cascadia is perfect for trails.

I do love all your photos. It is just lovely where you are. Keep the cows coming!

    1. Susanne avatar

I tried Brooks Ghost once. They were very comfy! If they had a very low drop model I would probably be interested, but I felt much more confident getting another pair of trusted Altras. I might try some Brooks again when I have the opportunity, just to see if they would be a viable option if at some point I need something more easily available (I have to buy Altra online).

What a fantastic week you’ve had, Susanne!
Your walking routine sounds so refreshing, especially with the beautiful weather and scenic hill routes. It’s inspiring to see how you balance gym sessions with outdoor activities—it’s a great reminder of the importance of variety in fitness.
Also, your walking shoe journey is so relatable! I also struggled a while to find the perfect running shoe… and still find myself rotating between different makes and styles.
It sounds like those new Altras are a game-changer for you! I agree with Jenny, get as many pairs as you want!
Wishing you continued success with your workouts and photo editing adventures—good luck finding the perfect alternatives to Adobe! 😊

    1. Susanne avatar

Walking is perfect to mix with strength training, because you can adapt the difficult level after how the body feels after a gym session.
It’s good to hear I’m not alone in “the search for the golden shoe”. These Altra Escalante have about the same stack height as the Lobe Peaks and are quite light and minimal but with arch support so they should be a good fit. I used Escalante 3 for a while and liked them a lot but these are a slightly different design.
Still working on an alternative for Photoshop… the one I tried these days doesn’t seem to have all the important tools. ☹️ Everything else I’ve figured out.

You are a really talented photographer and I love to see your photos. Oh yes, the shoes! I also use different shoes for walking and gym and running. Why not! Lateral raises are always surprisingly hard! Hope you have a great week ahead

    1. Susanne avatar

Aw, thanks! Photography season starts now!
I can’t wait to get my new shoes, and will stop feeling bad now for buying so many pairs of shoes.
Couldn’t agree more about lateral raises! They’re a killer exercise but so rewarding when you make progress with them.

  8. Jenn avatar

First of all… the sunshine! The cows! Your positivity! But also the cows!

When I used to work in the running store, we fitted walkers for shoes the same as we did runners. And the same “rules” applied to use and fit. So yes. Have five pairs! I encourage it and it’s the right thing to do!

    1. Susanne avatar

Yes, what everyone said – I should have several pairs of walking shoes to suit what sort of walking I want to do! Like I said to Coco, I just haven’t taken it seriously enough. Walking is very underrated as an exercise form and it all depends on how you do it and the distances and terrain.
Meanwhile, my minimal walking shoes turned out to be fabulous in the gym for the increased grip and stability!

You know I love the cow photos! My favorite is the fourth picture down of the equally black and white Holstein in mid chew.

Your gravel roads look fun for riding. I love riding gravel and bet your husband will as well. He’ll appreciate having wider and knobbier tires, and more clearance on muddy rides.

Nice job on capturing the hill in that photo! No matter how steep, my pictures never show how much uphill or downhill there really is.

    1. Susanne avatar

That one is my favourite too!
And it’s super hard to capture an uphill in a photo! It must be dependent on certain light conditions. This one was easier because it takes a turn. Usually I don’t manage to show the hills either.
I think that particular road is more like mountain bike territory than gravel, to be honest. It’s very rough. But we have very nice gravel roads here and there that are good for cycling. I saw something discouraging on YouTube though – that it’s illegal to ride bikes on most Irish forest gravel roads because they’re private property. I need to look for more info about that.

I love this post, Susanne. You sound so content and happy – even with the shoe and app challenges. I HATE the forced AI. I can now turn it off in Office; why can’t Adobe allow that? Sigh. I am still a Luddite and refuse to let my students use it – how can you learn to think if you’re outsourcing it to a model that continues to hallucinate? Sighhh…
But oh, the cows. Love those photos. <3
I am trying to figure out when I could get to Ireland – good gosh, it's expensive around New Year's. I'd have to come in the 2 weeks between ~12/19-1/2, and oof. About blew my eyebrows off. 😉 I'll keep pondering. Maybe during Spring Break one year, or in May rather than seeing my family. Hmmm…

    1. Susanne avatar

Yes, don’t even think of going to Ireland over New Year or any other time in the winter. You may be stuck somewhere because of a storm, and everything you love with Ireland (if that is nature, scenery) will be less accessible. Spring is a much better idea.
In Adobe you can hide that toolbar but I didn’t bother doing it because it has some other tools I sometimes use and I haven’t found how to easily get the toolbar back when I need it. But the thing that they keep throwing in AI tools that we don’t need is extremely annoying. The AI denoise in Lightroom is bliss, some other older features that I see as AI (but were not called that at the time) in Photoshop are useful but all the new AI stuff in Photoshop are very subpar compared to the older reliable content-aware tools. And now when there’s so much AI-generated crap floating around, AI is trained using…. AI-generated stuff. Imagine the “quality” of AI in the future!
I settled with the Affinity suite and have been using it a few weeks. It’s very good and in some situations actually better than Adobe! Instead of Lightroom I use something called Photomator which is owned by Apple.
