Fitness recap

Fitness recap – 1st of June edition

Hey, we’re into the month of June! How lovely is that? Except the fact that almost every day gives us winds up to 50 km/h or more but I can’t fix that. I’ve had a very in-routine, normal kind of week with mixed weather, good gym workouts and some good walks. This was also a good week for music – we got some new inspiration on the weekend when listening to a bluegrass band near Cork on Friday night.

In these posts I join a weekly link-up to share my weekly fitness routine and the ups and downs during the week with barbells, walking shoes or else. This is good for accountability, for my own documentation, the fitness/running blogger community is lovely, and I hope these posts might inspire someone to start lifting weights and generally getting more active. I usually also add in some bits from everyday life as well as some photos. Let’s get into it!

If the outdoors shows me something close to decent, I go out walking and I’ve become a fan of walking in the morning lately – there’s less traffic, more peace and quiet, and often nicer light for photography. For the best morning light, ideally I should go out fairly soon after sunrise, but in the summer this is… well, definitely a bit too early for my liking, so 9 am will have to be good enough.

Here’s a summary of the week:

Monday – gym
Tuesday – walking, 3,5 km
Wednesday – walking 3,5 km + gym
Thursday – rest
Friday – walking 3,5 km + gym
Saturday
Sunday

Monday

With insane winds, it was a good day to only go outside to get to the gym.

Fitness
  • Sumo deadlifts, barbell 35 kgs
  • Bulgarian split squats, barbell 35 kgs
  • Dumbbell row, 17,5 kgs
  • Cross-bench pullovers, one 15 kg dumbbell
  • Chest press, barbell 35 kgs
  • Flyes, 8 kg dumbbells
  • Forward raise, 6 kg dumbbells
  • Shoulder press, barbell 15 kgs

My highlights today were the chest press and the cross-bench pullover, the latter a great exercise for core as well as upper back. And I decided to solve the logistics with getting into position while holding a heavy dumbbell… haha.

I’m doing consistently not-too-badly with the Bulgarians these days. I follow the strategy of the left leg first, get the back foot up asap and get on to squatting before the brain knows what I’m doing, and that’s it. It usually works quite well.

Tuesday – walking, 3,5 km

It was a lovely morning for a walk, very mild and nice. According to my photo library I didn’t take any photos? I can’t remember why.

Wednesday – walking + gym

Another good morning for a walk! I went out after breakfast to do parts of the “cow route”, but didn’t want to overdo any hills since I was going to the gym later. I walked about 3,5 km again.

In the afternoon I went to the gym.

Fitness
  • Back squats, barbell 55 kgs
  • Split squats, barbell 40 kgs
  • Renegade row, 9 kg dumbbells
  • Chest press, 12,5 kg dumbbells
  • Good mornings, barbell 30 kgs
  • Bilateral dumbbell row, 12,5 kg dumbbells
  • Lateral raise, 8 kg dumbbells
  • Bent-over lateral raise, 6 kg dumbbells

I was still a bit sore since Monday, but this still was a very good session. I managed to push it quite well and today was also the first time in ages that I managed to do some decent sets of Renegade rows – I did 10-10-7-6 and that’s a good improvement for me compared to most times lately.

Thursday – indoor weather

We had 50 km/h winds with rain, and I made it a TLC day with rest and some gentle movements for my hips and lower back.

Friday – walking + gym

I went for a morning walk, I didn’t get my watch started (probably pressed the wrong button) but it was probably 3-3,5 km down towards the sea. I would have enjoyed walking all the way down but again, I wanted to save my legs for the gym.

But it was a fabulous walk! Very mild, very little wind, very little traffic – it was me with nature, the landscape, and I mainly heard birds and the occasional dog. This kind of walk is good for the soul.

Then in the afternoon it was gym time.

Fitness
  • Hexbar deadlifts, barbell 53 kgs
  • Reverse lunges, barbell 30 kgs
  • Barbell row, 25 kgs
  • Swimmers
  • Inclined flyes, 8 kg dumbbells
  • T press-ups, 4 kg dumbbells
  • Cuban press, 3 kg dumbbells
  • Upright row, barbell 22,5 kgs

It seems like those deadlifts were meant to be lighter… oops. But I loved it and my body felt good. After some standard exercises then there was time for a new challenge, the T press-up. This was another “I’ve found a new way to crush you” kind of exercise! I loved the challenge and I knew it would be excellent for my tight back muscles. I did it as shown in the link above but after the outward raise I also did a twist in the other direction with the arm underneath my body. You need to try this if you want to work on your core muscles!

In the evening we went to see a bluegrass band. I really looked forward to that. On the way there, the road was busy:

The show was great! We’ve both slipped into a lack of practice habits with music and none of us are happy with it but we also find it hard to recreate the good habits that we used to have. But after the concert we had some big new inspiration and talked about how to put more effort into music again, and made a plan that should work. We’ve had a good thing going with our music and should do something more with it than to just play the occasional tune here and there.

Saturday

A bad weather day, and I spent some time inside with my guitar while my husband “enjoyed” a good number of hours on the (indoor) bike.

In the evening we had a good jam session in the kitchen! Yes, we’re getting back to good music habits. I suspect there will be a blog post coming soon about this.

Sunday

My legs were itching to go for a good long walk, one of those 8-10 km walks, but I reluctantly stayed at home after seeing the amount of farming traffic on the road. I also had photo editing to do since Friday night, and general pottering around at home both inside and outside. Quite a relaxing day and I needed that.

The garden is in action.

Right now I mostly go with the flow, enjoy my gym sessions, navigate the weather and try to get outdoors as often as possible. Next week will be awfully windy and for now, looking at the forecast, I’m mostly preparing to go to Italy!

How are you? How was your week of training and else? Is there any decent weather where you are?

Thanks to Kim and Deborah for hosting the Weekly rundown link-up!

Oh wow those cows! Great photos this week! You are really talented! Getting those walks done early are a great idea. I also love the pullovers just feels so good! Have a great week

    1. Susanne avatar

Ah, thanks Deborah! I loved those cows too! I hope you get a good week too.

I’m reminded almost weekly that I should be doing Bulgarian split squats occasionally, but forget all about them by Monday’s workout. Funny how that happens! You are so good at challenging yourself with those hard exercises.

Usually the only traffic jams I get into when visiting the farm is of the bovine kind, too. 😉

    1. Susanne avatar

Bulgarian split squats are so good! Definitely something you should do now and then. But it’s easy to forget about exercises we don’t normally do. It’s a good addition to the balance training you’re doing!

Oof, those T press ups look hard! I might have to do them with light weights to start with, but I’ll try them this week. Sounds like you had a great week of workouts. Your walks look beautiful! And nice to hear you’re inspired musically. I”ll be interested in the upcoming blog post.
Wishing you beautiful weather this week!

    1. Susanne avatar

The weather already took a turn for the worse, haha! You definitely need to try the T press-ups. You can always ramp up the weight later if it feels too easy! I think with all the core exercises you’ve been doing, it should be an easy one for you.
It feels good to have a better plan for music. We kind of lost it when we stopped doing the weekly gig, but really we don’t have to have gigs to keep it up! To me it’s actually easier to get back to practice when I have nothing planned because then I can focus on new stuff and pure technique. I’m planning to write more about music generally here, so you might be interested in that. If you’re into folk/bluegrass that is!

That traffic jam is classic! Great photo! And the flowers too. And the tree. The scenery on your walks is spectacular and you are talented to capture it.

A solid normal week sounds good to me!

    1. Susanne avatar

Thank you! Isn’t it lovely with the traffic jam!!! I agree – a solid normal week is a good thing. When I read about how busy everyone else in this link-up seems to be, I feel grateful we live such a quiet life even if sometimes it feels a bit too quiet and uneventful.

This sure is the beautiful season, isn’t it? I love those tree tunnels over the road. Absolutely beautiful photos. Love the cows. When we were up at the lake last weekend, we saw cows running across the pasture!! I’d never seen cows running before. It must have been feeding time!

I’m so glad you’re getting back into performing! I can’t wait to hear how it goes!

    1. Susanne avatar

I’ve never seen cows running either! Although that time up the hill when they followed me on the other side of the fence they were close to it!
For now we’ll mostly work on refining our repertoire, add some new stuff and work on improving our instrumental skills (I’ve really deteriorated with the guitar or at least I feel like it) and I want us to start posting on YouTube again. Then later I hope we’ll find some good gigs. We have two sessions in a pub in town during the summer but that’s it. I’m not sure about the place where we’ve played a few Saturdays lately, they are very busy in the summer but I hope we’ll get back there. It was a lovely crowd to play for!

Amazing pics! The cows crack me up, but a great pic to document the event! Nice work with all those weights…reminds me it’s been a while since I’ve Bulgarian squatted…

    1. Susanne avatar

They are lovely, aren’t they?! It’s hard to get a good picture from the car window but this one came out quite good (with a bit of processing)!
Time for you do get back to some Bulgarians!

  7. Lindsay avatar

What beautiful pictures! I so appreciate the music habits mention – it’s hard to keep up the performing practice, but I’m sure so worth it. Congrats on the solid week!

    1. Susanne avatar

Thanks, Lindsay! Yes, it’s so easy to get comfortable but to keep the skills we need to continue the practice! I’ve set up good habits with fitness but I’m really behind with it when it comes to music.

You would have to drag me off the cow road. How beautiful they are! And look at all the gorgeous flowers! And the tree canopy!

Being a creative is so challenging. We really have to push ourselves to practice our craft constantly… when we don’t, it shows. If we’re burned out, it’s even worse to keep going. But I can’t wait to see what comes next for you and your music!

    1. Susanne avatar

I love those cow walks! We have a bunch of cows around where we live too that we often see cross the road in the late afternoon. They truly are beautiful!
And absolutely yes about being a creative… it’s wonderful but also so challenging. My main problem is also that I’m involved in so many different things (all creative btw)! I need to choose what to focus on. But I need regular music in my life… i realised this weekend that if I feel burnt out and empty like I have recently, it’s very often because I’ve let the most important things slip away, in this case music.

These pictures are simply gorgeous. My parents live at the bottom of a loooonng driveway and I just arrived yesterday and everything is bright green after recent rain and it formed a gorgeous “tunnel” as you call it. It made my heart very happy to see it.

The weather has been very rainy and cool, but the next few days it’s supposed to be sunny and sweltering. It can really flip-flop to different extremes this time of year.

    1. Susanne avatar

This is such a lovely time of the year, and there’s so much to photograph everywhere. Here sweltering doesn’t exist but we’ve flipped between “nice” and rainy with 60 km/h winds… 🙂

You’ve had a solid week despite the crazy winds – your gym sessions are no joke.
I had to laugh at your Bulgarian squat strategy; sounds like a smart way to trick the brain. Also, that T press-up sounds brutal in a good way – thanks for the link, I’ll give it a try (but with lighter weights, ha!)
And yes to morning walks – peace and decent light without traffic is a combo worth getting up for, even if not quite at sunrise.
Enjoy the prep for Italy, and fingers crossed for fewer gale-force days – if it’s any comfort, we have horrible weather right now in Cape Town!

    1. Susanne avatar

Whatever works, especially with hard exercises!
It seems like everyone has horrible weather right now! Actually ours isn’t too bad, the mornings are actually very nice but there’s so much annoying wind during the day. The temperatures are quite ok even if I prefer higher! It’s the wind that destroys it. I can’t wait to get to Italy for some REAL warm weather, even if their August heat likely will be a bit too much.

Love the cows!! We do have cows around here, but never walking on the street. Speaking of your part of the world … my daughter is flying to Dublin on July 3rd! She’s going on a European trip with her boyfriend. I’m so excited for them! How is the weather typically in early July? Hopefully we will be going to Italy next May as a family. I’m super excited about that.
Great workouts for you this week, and I’ve enjoyed looking at your green/flower pictures. So pretty this week!

    1. Susanne avatar

Here cows frequently cross the road! I’ve heard that Ireland has the most number of roads in the world (I guess related to the size of the country) because it’s a country that was built on agriculture for so long and there were so many cow paths that turned into roads.
How nice that your daughter is going to Ireland! We have a gig that evening if she wants to come! 🙂 Where is she planning to go?
Summer is the season with most probability for good weather but really, even in the summer it could be anything and she needs to bring clothes for most weathers. Definitely something for rain and wind and cooler temps (50-55F) just in case if she wants to hike or do anything else outdoorsy. But it can also be up to 25 with lovely sunny days, especially if you’re away from the coast. I hope she plans to see more than Dublin – there’s a lot of history and more to discover there but the real Ireland happens outside of Dublin (and Dublin is SOO expensive and crowded at that time of the year)!

Where in Italy are you going? May is a perfect season to visit!

      1. Lisa @ TechChick Adventures avatar

She is flying into Dublin, so spending a few days in the area before she flies out to Nice and then to Paris. She will spend one day going out to the cliffs (I don’t know which ones!) and I think that will be with a tour group since they are only 22 & 23 years old (extra charge to rent a car). I also know they have tickets for the Guiness brewery tour. Beyond that, more trip planning is still taking place!
As for Italy, we are still in the very early stages of thinking about a trip. I’m thinking the coast? That’s about the best guess I have right now since I haven’t researched it yet! But trust me, I’ll be overloading on YouTube travel videos soon!
