Fitness recap – storms and heel raises

I’ve been doing daily heel raises since late October. And finally I start to feel like some normality is taking hold in my right foot. Heel raises are good, and now I’m going to do them for the rest of my life.

I’ve been away from my fitness recap posts for a while. But they’re a great way to stay accountable with my fitness work so I’ve decided to come back and keep them going.

In these posts I join a weekly link-up to share my weekly fitness routine and the ups and downs during the week with barbells, walking shoes or else. This is good for accountability, for my own documentation, the fitness/running blogger community is lovely, and I hope these posts might inspire someone to start lifting weights and generally getting more active. I usually also add in some bits from everyday life as well as some photos. Let’s get into it!

You may notice that I’m back on my old domain! My Jävlaranamma url was great, but instead of building a separate website for my photography, I decided to put everything together on one blog instead. The jävlaranamma goes on here, though. And a lot more photography too.

After the autumn overwhelm and then the drama here at the end of last year, Christmas and New Year was all about relaxing and recovering from stress. Then there have been cold snaps, website rebuilds, various tech stuff to solve, and the storm of the century… life is never boring.

I’ve kept going to the gym, and only missed one gym session when my husband was in the hospital. During Christmas I trained at home, and I’ve kept doing my post-injury physio program, which now is a maintenance program for foot strength and general balance and stability.

My foot is now very much back to normal and I can’t wait to get back to proper walking! 4 km is the longest I’ve done so far after the injury, but it’s winter so I’m not pushing myself with it right now. The weather decides, but if it’s somewhat dry, no frost or ice, 4-5C (39-41F) or more and no crazy wind, then I’ll walk a few times a week.

Previously I’ve talked about how sometimes we had no weather, but this week we certainly had weather, and lots of craziness! But it’s been a good week.

Monday – gym

I started the day with my foot exercises, then in the afternoon it was time for the gym.

Fitness
  • Barbell squats, 50 kgs
  • Romanian deadlifts, 50 kg
  • Inclined chest press, 12,5 dumbbells
  • Barbell row, 30 kgs
  • Chest press, barbell 35 kgs
  • Straight arm pullovers, 9 kg dumbbells
  • Upright row, barbell 20 kgs
  • Forward raise, 6 kg dumbbells

After the foot injury I’ve felt so wobbly with squats, but recently I’ve been much better. Today I felt strong with them, and likewise with the RDLs. I was surprised when I was told they were also 50 kg – I was certain it was 45! My range of motion could have been better but my lower back was a bit stiff and achy so I tried to take it easy.

Everything else was good. My arm is much better and the forward raise isn’t particularly troublesome anymore. And doing two variations of chest press in one session has worked quite well lately too.

Tuesday – walking

I did my foot exercises, and after lunch I went out for a walk, about 4 km. It was a lovely day, it felt like spring! There was a lovely sunshine and about 10C. My foot felt like normal and only complained a little bit when I was almost back home.

I knew this would be the last walk for some time because at this point, I started hearing about a storm approaching, Storm Éowyn, that was expected to hit Ireland in the early hours of Friday, and the weather would start getting messy from Thursday.

Wednesday – gym

I did my foot exercises, and wanted to go out for a walk, but it was colder again with frost. At least I got to the gym.

Fitness
  • Reverse lunges, barbell 20 kgs
  • Side step-ups
  • Inclined flyes, 8 kg dumbbells
  • Renegade row, 8 kg dumbbells
  • Good mornings, barbell 35 kgs
  • Dumbbell row, 15 kgs
  • Bent-over lateral raise, 6 kg dumbbells
  • Shoulder press, barbell 15 kgs

The side step-ups were a great exercise! I can’t remember I’ve done it before. I thought they would work on the hips but learned later it involves most leg muscles except hips and glutes. I felt them mostly in the quads.

I really enjoy the Renegade row with this heavier weight. It’s good to get more of a challenge with the lifting part too. This is such a good exercise, for basically everything. Everyone should do some Renegade rows!

During the day, the upcoming storm was upgraded to big RED weather warnings for the entire country.

Thursday – storm prep

Oh, did those step-ups work on more than quads!! I did very little foot work this morning because my legs were so sore!

The day was mostly about getting updated info about the storm, and thinking about what to prepare in the garden. We have way too much rubbish around since my husband built his new office and since we moved out of the old office. It’s remaining building materials and things we need to take to the recycling centre. Including an old dishwasher! Our garden isn’t the prettiest right now.

My husband did a quick clean-up behind the house and secured a few other things. That’s all we could do.

All sorts of apocalyptic-sounding messages were coming out on the news, about how Storm Éowyn would be one of the worst storms to ever hit Ireland, and similar scary things. We haven’t had any problems after any previous storms so far, but there’s always a risk when you live so close to the sea and on the top of a hill like we do, and we need to take such weather warnings seriously.

I know that this is nothing for those of you who live in Florida or in the tornado-stricken areas of the US! But I was quite worried when I went to bed.

Friday – gym

Éowyn made landfall, and at 3 am we woke up by the doorbell ringing. That’s a sign there has been a power cut (it rings on its own when it restarts). It was absolutely wild outside the window, but nothing we hadn’t experienced during other storms.

Others weren’t so lucky, there’s been quite some damage around the country, including one death, and massive power cuts. It was a very strong storm with winds up to 182 km/h. As usual the west coast was worst hit. Clare, Galway et al certainly are beautiful areas but… I wouldn’t want to live there.

When we got out of bed around 7 am, the storm had more or less passed, and by lunchtime everything was calm here. In the afternoon I made it to the gym.

Fitness
  • Squats with a heel raise, barbell 45 kgs
  • Deadlifts, barbell 45 kg
  • Parachutes
  • Bilateral dumbbell row, 12,5 kgs
  • Flyes, 8 kg dumbbells
  • Chest press, 12,5 kg dumbbells
  • Lateral raise, 7 kg dumbbells
  • Cuban press, 3 kg dumbbells

I was quite distracted during this session, perhaps from all the tension the day before. But I’ve also had an issue with a hip/glute for a while, which now (I think) triggered some lower back pain when I did deadlifts. Exactly this happened last spring after the same kind of hip/glute issue. Then my trainer thought it was related to my piriformis, and I got some exercises to do. I will need to give this area some extra TLC for a while. This includes taking a break from some balance exercises (they work a LOT on hips and glutes!).

I still had a good gym session. It’s been a long time since I did the Cuban press. They were very much needed!

Saturday

I did some of my foot exercises but skipped some of them. Instead I did some hip mobility, piriformis stretch, deadbugs and a particular glute bridge my trainer recommended last spring.

In the afternoon I took some time to play around with the camera, testing a DIY lighting setup and different indoor photography ideas. We’re having a food competition in the camera club soon and as usual, I’m not doing it like most people…

I bought these figurines on Etsy a while ago and you can do so much fun with them! This is my first set and I’ll buy more variants later. I’ll share more about this project, with more photos, in a separate post.

Sunday

This will be a slow day with more photography, but I’ll also do more hip & glute TLC. The weather is absolutely insane with heavy rain and wind. My experience is that around here, the most damage is done when we have unannounced storms, and I’m starting to worry about one of our trees. But I worry more about the runners in the local 5 mile race today, which is going ahead despite forecasted wind gusts up to 80 km/h. Sure the skin is waterproof but they forgot to mention the winds…

I hope everyone is doing well and staying warm, dry and safe. How’s the weather where you are?

Thanks to Kim and Deborah for hosting the Weekly rundown link-up!

I missed a lot. Arm and foot injuries. Hubby in the hospital?

Glad to hear you’re doing better and are on the mend.

    Keep us in the loop.

    Those figurines are so cute.

Yea, I know. Last year was exhausting. But you know about the foot injury I got after hiking in Italy, don’t you? The arm injury is STILL the elbow (but really, it was in the tricep) injury I got when pulling weeds last May!! It should be healed by the time the next gardening season starts. LOL.
I think I linked to the post where I mentioned my husband’s illness. It was nothing serious (a gall bladder issue) but everything got complicated from the lack of communication from the hospital staff, and for a while I almost got vibes that there was something really bad going on (I couldn’t be in the hospital with him and couldn’t even get through on the phone). In the end he had surgery and came home the day before Christmas, doing better than he had in months, but I really stressed out with the whole experience. Everything is good now except the weather!
I’ll be back posting regularly again now for sure.

I heard about that storm! It was on the news here. I’m glad you fared well–it sounds brutal. The weather sure has be been making a lot of news lately!

Glad to see you have been active. I’ve missed your posts–especially your photos! I don’t know if I’ll ever get to Ireland, so it’s fun to live vicariously through you!

    1. Susanne avatar

I realise now afterwards that the storm was quite bad. We were just very lucky.
Some good news for you is that there will be a lot more photography here now! So check some non-rundown posts too. I don’t expect a lot of Irish scenery for a while looking at the weather forecast… but there’s hope for a walk on Thursday. Let’s hope the weather gods will be nicer to us in February.

I was glad to see your post again. I’ll check in here more often.

That photograph with the tree is gorgeous! And those mini climbers — they made me smile.

    1. Susanne avatar

I’m glad to be back posting! And I’ll be writing here a lot more generally.
Those climbers are so fun. I’d like to buy more and looked at fitness-related figurines yesterday – but only one (2 cm high) cost like 10 euro in shipping! I’ll certainly buy some, but will play around more with these first.

The weather isn’t playing nice with any of us, huh! I’m grateful we’ve “only” had extreme temps ((thus far, LOL)), but I know there’s probably some real precip headed our way before Spring arrives, which is still two months away. I’m so glad to have you back with us!!!

    1. Susanne avatar

Aww, thank you!! I’m so glad to be back!
You had some inhumane temps this week for sure! I hope the rest of the winter is nice to you but I know, you’re in Iowa and it’s only the end of January, so..

Nice to have you back in our link up. Glad you weathered the storm ok-yes it’s very stressful to know they are coming! Happy to hear that your workouts are going well and your foot is feeling so much better

    1. Susanne avatar

Thanks, Deborah! Yes, I’ve realised we were very lucky here. These storms are always stressful but especially when they are described like this time. Apparently it got some extra energy just with the right timing as it hit the west coast, so it got very powerful and fast-moving. Weather warnings can get very exaggerated here, but we always need to take them seriously because we just never know.

Oh my gosh! I am so glad you are back! I saw someone on TikTok say that their roof was blown off and they were unhoused from this storm! Absolutely terrifying, especially in colder temperatures! I am so glad you are ok.

The climber figurines on the cheese are perfect. Your photography is gorgeous, and you have so much talent. It’s nice to get to follow that as well as your fitness.

    1. Susanne avatar

Thank you, that’s such a lovely compliment!!
Yes, I read afterwards a lot of scary stuff on the news. We were so lucky. I’m now considering asking some professionals whether we should have one of our trees cut down. It looks sturdy but you just don’t know! And it’s very tall so if it would fall, that would be the end of us.

  7. Jenny avatar

I’m glad you’re back with the Weekly Rundown- I always get inspiration from your workouts (and my strength training definitely needs inspiration right now.) While I was reading this I was thinking how strong your feet must be, with all this consistent work.
I hadn’t heard of your storm, but that’s because I don’t watch any news these days (for reasons which perhaps are obvious.) It sounds intense- glad you’re okay.
I’m looking forward to seeing more of your photography!

    1. Susanne avatar

I certainly hope so, about my feet! My physio programs this time have been quite extensive. This coming week I’m going to mix up the exercises, and not do all of them every day. The final test comes during the spring when I’ll go for longer walks and some easy hikes.
You know, I barely read any news either. Except for following the storm, I stay away from the news as much as I can. 🙁

  8. Marcia avatar

Sorry about the injuries and I hope your husband is fully recovered as well. Yikes that storm sounds dreadful. I’m glad you fared pretty well through all of it.
That pic of the figures climbing the cheese is amazing and so creative! Love it!

    1. Susanne avatar

I love experimenting with those little climbers. Can’t wait to take them out in the garden!
My husband is doing really well. He’s back to most training, just not full strength training yet. As for my injuries, the foot (injured in September last year) is much better than the elbow (injured in May last year)! I’ll get there.

  9. Melissa avatar

Dang, sorry you’re not feeling so well – glad you’re giving your body some TLC – good idea! That storm sounds scary – thank goodness everything worked out ok. Happy to hear your husband is doing well again too! Hopefully you’ll both be back soon!

    1. Susanne avatar

Yes, this body is a bit banged up! Ironically, I lift heavy weights in the gym but I got my injuries from hiking in bad shoes, and from pulling weeds. My hip problem is likely a result of doing a bit too much of balance exercises that work a lot on the hips, in combination with not moving a lot, because of the weather. I’ll be back to normal soon. The foot is doing good finally!

Yikes on the storm!! We rarely get storms here in Ohio like they do in Florida, or like your area. That scares me! I’m glad you are OK. Were you able to fall back asleep after the doorbell woke you up? I would be stressing.
    Love those figurines!

    1. Susanne avatar

Storms are scary! You never know how bad it will be. Fortunately I was able to get back to sleep.
Today I’ve bought some more figurines! They’re so much fun!

  11. Debbie avatar

Glad you survived the storm without too much damage. Happy to hear the foot is continuing to improve to almost normal. Selfishly, you being able to walk means more pictures for us!

Those mountain climbers are adorable. Can’t wait to see what else you have up your photography sleeve.

    1. Susanne avatar

Yes about the walking! Sadly there are more variables around it, such as the weather, and worn out walking shoes. I ordered another pair of walking shoes from another brand but there was trouble with the sizing and it will likely take a while to have them changed. But at least the weather forecast is looking good for the next few days! I miss my photo walks so much.

  12. Jessie avatar

I’m sorry to hear about your husband’s health scare, but glad everything is alright now. Frustrating on the injuries.

I LOVE those figurines and am going to buy some from Etsy!

    1. Susanne avatar

They are lovely, aren’t they?! I’ve ordered more. Some are hard to find and are shipped from Indonesia and the likes.. I try to stay with EU-based shops because of the shipping cost. There is one excellent seller in Sweden (Kepp Miniatures, I think) and one in the Netherlands. I’ve seen runner figurines! But I don’t know where they were made.

  13. Anne avatar

Figurines are awesome, storm is not (but it’s past! and it’s almost March!), photos are amazing. So glad you’re getting out for walks and picking things up (literally) at the gym.

    1. Susanne avatar

Yes, things are picking up (or, I’m picking them up, haha!)! Walking is rare this winter for weather reasons but I’m happy I can at least get to the gym.
