There’s something special about fog

Do you have a particular favourite kind of light or weather condition for photography? Everyone else seems to swear by the golden hour, and I get that, but personally I’m not particularly interested in sunsets. Early morning light is fantastic (and I should try to get out more often in the early hours), but what really tickles my fancy is haze and fog, at whatever time of the day.

There’s something special about fog. It creates a particular kind of solitude and silence. It’s like sounds are muffled in the fog, and I’ve found it very soothing for the soul to walk in the fog.

I enjoyed a lovely walk in late March:

And again in late April. This day I was very lucky. The fog had lifted when I left home, but when I came closer to the sea I saw that the mist was still heavy over the bay, and when I came back home, the fog was back!

I actually slowed down to not be discovered by this lady. She is lovely, but I wanted to be alone and enjoy the stillness.

These photos are absolutely stunning, Susanne!
You’ve really captured that quiet magic that only fog can create. I know what you mean about the muffled silence – there’s something so calming about being wrapped in that soft, grey cloud. I love your last sentence about slowing down to stay hidden in the stillness!
I think you would enjoy Cape Town in winter – the fog rolling in from the sea is quite amazing!

Thanks, Catrina! You said it perfectly about “being wrapped in that soft, grey cloud” – I didn’t find the right word to describe it at the time of writing, but it’s like we’re hugged by the soft calming fog.

These are gorgeous! It’s incredible how different landscapes look depending on the weather. I woke up to fog – fairly unusual where I live, ironically enough because I’m near water – and it was a nice surprise.

Hi Elisabeth and thank you! I did an online photography class where the teacher recommended to take photos of the same landscape scene in different weathers and different times of the year. I liked that idea. You’re right, fantastic how only the weather can make such a difference. Thanks for stoping by!
